Don’t Drive Your Automobile if the Head Gasket Is Cracked

We cannot overstate how important it is that you avoid driving your automobile if the head gasket is cracked. This is serious engine damage that requires partially rebuilding the engine to repair it. Even though the engine will still run, it is not operating as it should be. If you continue to operate the vehicle, you will cause additional and severe damage to the engine. Here’s what’s going on under the hood.

The Motor Oil Is a Diluted Mess

When the head gasket cracks, the motor oil and coolant mix. This creates a diluted mess that looks like a mocha milkshake. As the diluted motor oil circulates through the engine, it causes damage and increases the engine’s heat. In addition, the oil will leak into the cylinder block through the crack in the head gasket. Unfortunately, the motor oil can damage the engine beyond repair.

The Coolant Is Leaking

The coolant is also leaking into the cylinder block. In fact, the head gasket creates the seal that prevents the coolant and oil from getting into the cylinders. This seal is now broken, and, as such, you’ve got coolant flowing into the cylinders and out of the engine. Your engine needs the right amount of coolant circulating through it in order to operate at normal temperatures.

The Engine Is Overheating

The leaking coolant is going to reduce the level of coolant in the engine, and the engine will start to overheat. You will notice that if you try a few tricks, such as turning up the heater, this will not reduce the engine’s temperature. Not only is the coolant level too low but the engine is also being exposed to the heat from the combustion chamber that is no longer sealed off by the head gasket.

The Radiator Cap May Burst

In fact, your engine can get so hot that the radiator cap may burst. You will hear the coolant start to boil in the radiator before it explodes. Once you hear the boiling noise, pull over and turn off the engine right away. Do not pop the hood or stand in front of the radiator until the engine is cold.

The Cylinders Are Contaminated

Finally, as we mentioned above, the cylinders are now contaminated with motor oil and coolant. These two auto fluids will burn away with the air and fuel when the spark plugs generate sparks. This produces excess exhaust that will have a bluish-white tint to it.

As you can see, driving your automobile with a cracked head gasket is a dangerous undertaking. It’s much better to have your vehicle towed to our shop for the head gasket repair.
